Collabathon Success: Shaping the Future of Supply Chains in Las Vegas!

Uniting Industry Leaders to Transform the Fresh Produce Supply Chain

tl;dr: What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas! The Collabathon brought produce pros together to brainstorm solutions for supply chain chaos. We didn't sit still kicking off with an interactive supply chain simulation that set the stage for thousands of sticky notes to form living map of the global supply chain.

Key Points:

  • The Collabathon in Las Vegas gathered industry leaders to address supply chain issues.

  • Participants used Event Storming to understand complex processes.

  • The GS1 Tomato Experience simulated real-world supply chain challenges.

  • The event emphasized data interoperability and collaborative problem-solving.

The stage for a transformative future for the fresh produce supply chain

The IFPA Fresh Supply Chain of the Future Collabathon, held in December 2024 in Las Vegas, brought together over 100 industry leaders to tackle pressing challenges facing the global fresh produce supply chain. Participants engaged in Event Storming exercises, a powerful tool for unlocking collective industry knowledge and building a shared understanding of complex processes. Through this collaborative approach, attendees visualized and dissected complex processes, revealing critical insights into the flow of information and actions within the fresh produce supply chain.

The Collabathon also featured the GS1 Tomato Experience, a hands-on simulation that vividly revealed critical supply chain challenges. Participants simulated moving product from the grower to the retailer, which highlighted issues such as quality checks being sacrificed for speed, temperature monitoring gaps, documentation errors, physical handling creating sequence disruptions, and pressure to keep the product moving often led to cutting corners. The event successfully shifted from theoretical discussions to practical problem-solving, with participants collaboratively outlining strategies to address inefficiencies, data silos, and sustainability concerns.

The event focused on unlocking the value of interoperable data sharing. Key takeaways included the importance of overcoming data silos through open standards, building trust through secure mechanisms, enhancing efficiency through predictive analytics and automation, and meeting consumer demands by ensuring traceability and sustainability. The Collabathon demonstrated the power of collaboration and set the stage for a transformative future for the fresh produce supply chain.
